Music from Las Americas

Workshop for choir, orchestra and soloists with Latin American sacred music

August 5 to 12, 2024

An extraordinary concert focuses on the rich musical tradition of Latin America. In this program, Christian traditions, European forms such as the mass and motet and these countries' own vibrant musical culture merge into a unique musical form that is both deeply religious and innovative. Latin American music, especially its sacred works, is severely underrepresented in Europe. Apart from Piazzolla's tangos, the diversity of this continent rarely finds its way into European concert halls. This concert presents works that are unjustly underrepresented in the conventional concert repertoire and that have always been able to bridge the boundaries between tradition and innovation.

Program:

  1. Ariel Ramirez (Argentina): Misa Criolla: A fascinating work that combines traditional Catholic mass forms with Latin American rhythms and instruments.
  2. Heitor Villa Lobos (Brazil): Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5: A piece that combines the rigor and beauty of European Baroque music with Brazilian folk music. Arrangement for string quintet and guitar by Fredrik Schwenk
  3. Martin Palmeri (Argentina): Misa Tango (also known as Misa à Buenos Aires): An innovative combination of tango music and liturgical texts, reflecting the deeply spiritual yet vibrant musical culture of Argentina.

This workshop invites you to discover the musical diversity and deep emotions of these works. It offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the spiritual and cultural world of Latin America, which goes far beyond the familiar tango sounds.
