Workshop: The sounds of Iran with the Sufia Ensemble
Date: July 30 to August 4, 2024
The Sufia Ensemble invites you to a workshop that presents the diverse world of Iranian traditional art music. In a one-hour performance, three different Dastgahs (modes) will be presented, each lasting 20 minutes. Each section ends with a solo improvisation of an instrument demonstrating virtuoso playing.
Program:
First part — mode “Awaz-e Dashti”:
- Renge Dashti
- Masnavi
- Improvisation in Iranian folk music and folk songs
- Solo improvisation of the instrument “kamanche” (spiked violin)
Second part — mode “Bayat-e Esfahan/Homayun”:
- Renge Esfahan
- Improvisation in Iranian-Kurdish folk music and folk songs
- Tasnif (folk song) “Baz havaye vatanam arezust”
- Solo improvisation of the instrument “santur” (dulcimer)
Third part — mode “Mahur/Rast-Pandschgah”:
- A Kurdish tasnif
- The piece “Shang”, composed by Azin Yousefan
- Solo improvisation of the instrument “Tombak” (cup drum)
This workshop offers a rare opportunity to get to know the subtleties and depth of the Iranian musical tradition. We cordially invite all interested parties to participate in this event and learn more about the different modes and virtuoso techniques of traditional Iranian instruments.
